WhateverLab & HeavyMachinery Guide

You want to use the Whateverlab (WEL) or the Heavy Machinery (HM)? You can solder, get creative with electronics, 3D print, drill, weld and much more. Here are the rules you need to follow if you want to use our equipment. Disclamer: Most of the wiki pages linked are not available in English yet.

Workshop general policies

  • Inform yourself before you use a tool for the first time
  • You need to get instruction for some machines (examples: lasercutter, CNC, lathe)
  • After you are done, put the tools back where they belong. Tidy up after yourself, especially the surfaces
  • You wanna leave your project at Metalab? Label everything properly and clearly (at least a way to contact you and the date). You can use an empty project box or request a locker.
  • Before using unlabeled materials that are lying around the space ask the people present or on Matrix if anyone already wants it for their project
  • If you damage anything or find a broken tool, write a message to core@metalab.at
  • Minors need an adult supervisor if they want to use machines or tools
  • Pay attention and make sure to use the right tool for the job. Certain drill bits are only for wood, the side cutter is for cutting wire, some saw blades are only for softwood and not for other types
  • We don't have the right tools? You can suggest getting a new tool at the Jour-Fixe. Get detailed information and compare prices beforehand.

Working with machines

  • Use personal protective equipment: eye protection, ear protection, correct shoes, respiratory protection
  • wear fitted clothes, no strings (hoodies, aprons,…), no jewelry, tie your hair
  • When you leave your work place turn off all machines. For cleaning and maintenance you also need to turn off everything.
  • for machines with turning parts: don't wear gloves!
  • Safety mechanisms and safety accessories. You are not allowed to remove safety mechanisms
