Description
We are operating a hackerspace, an open center for people who do creative things with technology. We offer free infrastructure for various projects and initiatives ranging from user group meetings to people tinkering with affordable 3D printing technology. We frequently host or organize public workshops, lectures, and talks.
There is also a wikipedia article about us at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metalab
Is the nature of your organisation not for profit, non-government, non-academic, non-commercial, non-political and has no religious affiliation?
Yes.
Although we have no official charitable status our form of organisation precludes commercial gain by law. Also, our bylaws mandate that all officers perform their duties without compensation and that in the event of disbandment any remaining assets are to be transferred to an organisation that adheres to similar standards.
We have no direct affiliations with any other organisations. We hold the view that as an infrastructure provider we should refrain from advocating any political or religious views unless it is a matter that directly impacts the operation of our space.
Will our software be used on any projects whose outputs will be used by a commercial, government, political or religious organisation?
No. We are however planning to keep our open participation policy on the wiki so like any publicly editable site inappropriate material could be posted from time to time. As we have quiet a few active contributors for our current wiki we don't expect that to be a problem.
Reasons to sponsor metalab
We believe that a truly open environment that does not preclude anyone from participating is paramount to creating a climate where ideas can be born and realized. Consequently the use of our basic infrastructure is always free of charge and machines like a laser cutter or a cnc mill can be used at cost.
As membership is not a requirement to use Metalab our monetary resources are quite limited. We receive small grants by the city of vienna, but we mostly rely on people who are enthusiastic about our ideals and the way we run our space to become members and support us.
Our open participation policy has lead to over 1000 registered wiki users in the last 4 years and although most of them only registered for workshops or talks we are set to keep this open door policy. Unfortunately, this also means that we will not be able to afford a regular Confluence license.
However, I am certain that our unique mix of users, including founders and technical staff of many local IT companies, will take note of the markable improvement your software will provide over the current mediawiki. Also, we'd list Atlassian on our "sponsored by" page if that is alright with you.
how we plan to use the software
We want to replace our current mediawiki with confluence. The wiki is our central place for coordinating and planning. It is also used by people that use metalab infrastructure to document smaller projects and provide information about events or talks they organize.
We'd like to use crowd for unifying the userbases of our wiki, the mailinglist and the member administration application. Also, various appliances we build like the entry system could provide a web interface with additional functionality for registered members if we were to use a centralized identity management system.
