The basic idea is to build an open source vending machine from scrap parts as cheap as possible with as little tools as possible. Total costs should be less then €50, only basic tools should be required(think a hundred years ago).
Coin sorting mechanism
The coin sorting is done mechanically, basically by measuring the coins size.
